It is a pretty rich collection for the Flag Museum in its history and culture. Flags, coats of arms, administrative maps, and military uniforms are on display according to their timeline. The most remarkable items include banners from the Nakhchivan Khanate, constitutions of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of different years, banknotes used in the region, and coins minted in Nakhchivan.

Visiting hours at present are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while days closed are announced on boards in the hall and by museum staff. Access to the museum is free, so you can go directly into the museum without buying a ticket from the ticketing office. Online tickets are not necessary for individual visitors, and school and institutional groups are accommodated by appointment only. On days that commemorate anniversaries, events are held in the square, so the number of visitors increases and the surroundings become much livelier.

In addition, one of the striking features is a copy of the decree “On State Symbols” dated November 17, 1990, and original photographs from that very day. These documents-not just objects in a display case-are also tangible windows into Nakhchivan’s political memory. If you visit as a group, you can take a guided tour, while if you come individually, you can explore the exhibition at your own pace, following the information boards.

Flag Square and the Flag Museum are at one of the highest points in Nakhchivan. You can easily reach them by taxi from the city center, or drive up the hill in your private car on a short but hilly route. As you approach the site, on-site staff will assist with parking and stopping points.

It’s a lot breezier than in the center of the city because it is situated on a hilltop with an open plateau. In winter, you will definitely want warm layers and a windproof jacket, gloves, and a hat, while in summer, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and water are helpful to have. If you prepare for wind or sun, walks and photo breaks alike will be so much more fun.

For photography enthusiasts, Flag Square is a true open-air studio. The upper elevations of the square and the panoramic terraces around the museum offer you the possibility to capture in one frame both the giant flag and the Nakhchivan city skyline. Sidelighting, more so at sunrise and sunset, makes the monument and the city’s layout even more impressive. Photos taken during these hours will be the highlights of your trip to Nakhchivan.

Personal photography is allowed freely in open areas. Using flash, tripods, professional equipment, or drones inside the museum requires permission in advance. Because of the city’s flight rules and given space, the use of UAVs is subject to special conditions. You will be subjected to a security check at the entrance; sharp objects and devices prohibited by law are not allowed in.

These precautions help ensure your personal safety and the official character of the area. Families with children, especially school children, will find Flag Square and the Flag Museum particularly appealing. The chronological exhibitions have the advantage of allowing children to more easily understand the chronology of events and the meanings of state signs.

Watching the original documentary materials of the 1990 decision gives the opportunity to correlate the events mentioned in lessons with real documents. Although there is a steep slope with strong winds outside, the accessible floor inside the exhibition halls makes it easy to walk around with wheelchairs and strollers.

At the same time, a child should be looked after by an adult during the whole visit. The complex has terraces, green spaces, and modern lighting that together create an atmosphere that is very pleasant, above all in the evenings. Restrooms and recreational areas are also parts of the complex.
